Aio Media: Bringing the PGF Marae Renovations to Life with Expert Documentary Production
Āio Media, a Rotorua-based Māori-owned production company, is proud to present our one-hour documentary capturing the PGF Marae Renovation Project across Ruatoki and Ruatāhuna, Aotearoa. This insightful documentary showcases the transformation of several marae, made possible through support from the Provincial Growth Fund, and One Foundation for the support in bringing this story to screen.
Led by producer and field director Jessica McMillan, the documentary features the interviewing expertise of Tamati Waaka, with Ben Marr as Director of Photography and primary camera operator and editor. Max Yeagr supported as additional camera operator and editor, Kimoro Taiepa delivered translations and subtitles, and sound mastering was completed by Sam Eriwata. Special thanks to Celia Solomon and Asher Nikora for their unwavering support throughout the production.
We were especially proud to witness and document the incredible mahi that Asher and his team at Xcel Builders have delivered over the years. Their dedication and craftsmanship have helped breathe new life into these important spaces.
Importantly, this PGF programme not only revitalised marae buildings, but also created the opportunity to build practical skills within the community — resulting in long-term career pathways and employment opportunities for local whānau.
This cultural documentary reflects Āio Media’s commitment to authentic Māori storytelling. With over 40% of New Zealanders engaging with cultural content, this project reaffirms the power of indigenous narratives to educate, uplift, and connect.
